Famous paintings turn into carpets
The carpets, Turks sit on throughout history lay on the ground to keep their tents warm, or decorate their walls, have become a true work of art that reflects our culture over time. Handmade carpets produced in Uşak, which has turned into one of the most important carpet centers of the Ottoman Empire since the 15th century, have been valued as works of art rather than their function in every period of history.

Throughout history, distinguished families in Europe have used paintings by famous painters on carpets in Uşak as decorations on their walls, floors, and tables. So much so that Uşak carpets, which feature paintings by Hans Holbein and Lorenzo Lotto, especially important painters of the 15th century, began to be known by the names of Holbein and Lotto. In addition, Uşak carpets continued to reflect the local culture with many types such as star, medallion, sling, cloudy and sprinkling.

The 46 handmade Uşak carpets, which will meet with art lovers at the “Uşak Carpet Exhibition” organized by the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts, will bring many historically used motifs to Northern Cyprus. Patterns and motifs created by one of our most important contemporary painters, Devrim Erbil, who is also from Uşak, are also on the Uşak carpets that will be exhibited.

The “Uşak Carpet Exhibition”, which will be the 435th exhibition of the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts, can be visited free of charge until February 10.
