The Medical Students Association of Northern Cyprus Qualified to Become a Full Member of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations

The Medical Students Association of Northern Cyprus (MSANC) attended the 70th of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) Meeting held online between 26 February-14 March representing medical students worldwide.

MSANC participated in the International Federation of Medical Student Associations for the first time in 2017 as a partial member. Continuing its studies with great devotion for 4 years, MSANC made a presentation to be promoted to the membership status of the International Federation of Medical Student Associations on March 7, 2021. MSANC, in the voting held on 12 March, qualified to become a full member of IFMSA with the majority of the votes. In this respect, it had the right to vote in decisions taken by the federation and gained the right to take part in various positions in the federation.

They will continue to host medical students from the world in our country
Sultan Jarboue Salaheldin, Honorary Member of Near East University Faculty of Medicine, President Asu Özince, Secretary-General İlayda Feray Yayla, Vice President for Internal Affairs Canan İlgu, Vice President in charge of Foreign Affairs attended the IFMSA General Assembly. Assistant Murat Kahraman, Internship Exchange Officer Sara Darweesh, Public Health Officer Rahaf Alalami, Human Rights and Peace Officer Amin Alasfar, Research Exchange Officer Candost Sarioban, Medical Education Director Fateme Ekrami, Reproductive Health and AIDS National Officer Erva Öztürk, Project and Activities Supervisor Aya Ali, Supervisory Board Member Aysu Özbek, Reproductive Health Local Union Officer Suğde Aktun, Human Rights and Peace Local Union Officer Sait Baran Durhan attended the meeting, too.

The students participated in the training of the branches of work and shared the activities and projects they have conducted in collaboration with the medical faculty students from all over the world, and also participated in the internship exchange fair. Students, who also made presentations promoting the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Near East University Hospital, had the opportunity to present their studies to the world with the good relations they established with the unions of other countries.

Within the framework of the agreements signed between MSANC and the medical student associations of other countries, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will host 31 medical faculty students from 22 countries to carry out internships in our country with the internship exchange program in the summer of 2021, and at the same time, our medical faculty students selected through the examination will go to other countries to conduct their internship studies for a month. As a result of these internships, our students will also have the opportunity to see different cultures in another geography and improve themselves by conducting theoretical and practical studies abroad.

MSANC, which has represented our country in international meetings many times until today, has also organized dozens of events in various fields. It drew attention to public health by organizing Public Health Days in the villages, met with children of preschool age and gave hygiene training, and hosted 24 medical students from 19 different countries within the framework of the exchange program. It is preparing to host exchange students who will come from abroad in 2021.

The Medical Students Association of Northern Cyprus Advisor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emil Mammadov emphasized that he is very proud of carrying out consultancy services with the projects implemented by the members of the association. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mammadov said, “We would like to thank the Near East University Family who provided every opportunity to make our voice heard on national and international scientific platforms”.

Near East University Dean of Students Prof. Dr. Dudu Özkum Yavuz congratulated the Northern Cyprus Medical Students Association and reminded that the Northern Cyprus Medical Students Association (MSANC) has made many achievements so far and said, “We are happy that our students represent us on international platforms.”

Prof. Dr. Özkum, expressing her pride with the Medical Students Association of Northern Cyprus, Dudu Özkum Yavuz said; “As Near East University, we represent not only our university but also our country on every platform we take place. In this respect, it is a great proud for us that the Medical Students Association of Northern Cyprus, which has gained full membership in IFMSA, successfully represents our university and our country”.
