The God of Sun NEU RA 25 got a start in South Africa

The God of Sun NEU-RA25, which was produced by the Near East University, sister university of University of Kyrenia, got start at the International Sasol Solar Challenge races.

According to the press release from the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of NEU, (Near East University Nicosia, Cyprus), the God of Sun RA 25, which is TRNC’s first registered solar-powered vehicle designed and produced by R&D teams of NEU, got start in Pretoria, the capital of South Africa.
The biannual Sasol Solar Challenge which kicked off on Saturday is an eight-day race for solar-powered cars, which are built by participating teams and driven on various types of roads throughout South Africa. The race route is 2 000 km long, completed in sections of approximately 250 km a day, with optional loops to increase mileage as much as possible. Competitors harness sun power to race their solar-powered vehicles from Pretoria to Cape Town. Eight teams are competing in this year’s race, including entrants from The Netherlands, Turkey, TRNC, local universities, and local schools.

According to the press release, on the first day of the race, technical controls for solar cars had been made. NEU-RA 25, which is racing on behalf of TRNC, received the best results from the controls including 35-50-80 km brake testing, static testing, and exit from the vehicle in emergency cases.

According to the press statement, the Sasol Solar Challenge has been endorsed by International Solarcar Federation (ISF), Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), and World Wildlife Fund (WWF). It was emphasized that Sasol Solar Challenge 2014 was funded by 22 organizations in Africa and around the world.

Touching upon the crucial role of international events in the promotion of countries, Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel said that they found opportunity with RA 25 to show the point where the Near East University has brought TRNC in terms of technology and innovation. “Together with our team consisting of twelve engineers, students and administrators, we are extremely proud of waving our flag in an international race” noted he.
