The first Maritime History Research Centre of our country will be established within the institutional body of University of Kyrenia.

According to press info released by Press and Public Relations Directorate of University of Kyrenia, featuring a powerful state has always been directly related to sovereign established throughout seas, the states who had control of power throughout seas have had great advantages in politics and economic issues. The importance of having commanding power on seas continues even at peaceful times, and marine trade has always played an important role on international relations and economic relations. In this respect, establishing a research centre on maritime history in our country and in Turkey, which both have deep roots in marine history as well as a rich maritime culture and heritage, reflects the vision or University of Kyrenia.The Levant maritime facilities, which have been carried out since ancient times in the Eastern Mediterranean region that is regarded as the centre of maritime trade, maintained its circumstances and importance since centuries.

Cemre S. Günsel Haskasap; We are aiming to have a say in the field of maritime history and its cultural heritage in the world…

Cemre S. Günsel Haskasap, Founding Rector of University of Kyrenia, made a statement on this issue and said that the University of Kyrenia, which is the only university specializing on maritime and aviation studies, will contribute much to the culture and academic World of our country with establishment of this research centre, and emphasized that despite the fact that they are a fairly new university in this sector, the aim to have a say on World maritime history and cultural heritage. Cemre S. Günsel Haskasap, also said that they do believe that the Maritime Museum of which the establishment is carried out through joint studies of Near East University and University of Kyrenia, will complement each other and function more effectively, and that they are pleased in this respect.

Cemre S. Günsel Haskasap stated that the main aims of the centre are carrying out all sort of studies and research to obtain data on maritime history, publishing and presenting the works of researchers studying on this field, producing nationally and internationally joint projects and making contributions to raise awareness on protecting the cultural heritage of our maritime history.

Besides, the centre will undertake responsibilities in promoting and supporting new undergraduate and postgraduate studies on maritime history, publishing the findings of studies in book, catalogue, journal or encyclopedia forms, collecting studies and research results conducted at national and international level in forms of boks, thesis, journals, articles and so on, and establishing a specialist library, presenting the cultural heritage on maritime history and the studies carried out on maritime history at national and international levels, and conducting joint studies and research in cooperation with centres, universities and institutions established with similar aims.

Cemre S. Günsel Haskasap, stating that the centre will be established under the guidance and assistance of retired marine colonel Ali Rıza İşipek, one of the most important figures of Turkey in marine history issues, emphasized that she has every confidence to believe that Ali Rıza İşipek will contribute much to the establishment and studies of the centre as well as to the developments of University of Kyrenia as İşipek has extensive knowledge and experince in both national and international maritime studies, published several important books and conducted studies on maritime history, and still actively perform in many national and international institutions related to maritime history and culture.
