As part of the collaboration between University of Kyrenia and the Italy-based Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, the second phase of a project initiated in the previous term is being completed this term. Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, located in Naples, Italy, is a research institute dedicated to fundamental research in biology, particularly known for its interdisciplinary work in biochemistry, molecular biology, neurobiology, cell biology, marine botany, molecular plant biology, benthic ecology, and ecophysiology.

Aiming to preserve the ecosystem and biodiversity in the Mediterranean, a collaboration protocol was established to begin a scientific research project entitled “Patterns of Biodiversity Loss in The Eastern Mediterranean.” Within the scope of this project, samples are collected from specific areas in the sea at designated depths and are initially processed in the marine biology laboratories at University of Kyrenia. After undergoing preliminary examination and a series of processes, the samples are then packaged and sent to the laboratories at the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn Institute for more detailed analysis and research. By comparing data from studies conducted at different times and seasons, we aim to draw important conclusions about the biology and ecosystem of our region.

The first phase of the project, “Patterns of Biodiversity Loss in The Eastern Mediterranean,” was completed between 02/05/2024 and 13/05/2024, and the next phase was scheduled and completed between 17/10/2024 and 30/10/2024. The project team includes Prof. Dr. Mehmet Fatih Hüseyinoğlu from University of Kyrenia as the lead, Dr. Gökhan Tarı as the coordinator, and PhD student Ayaz Ahmad. Additionally, from the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn Institute, Dr. Paolo Albano; from the University of Bologna, master’s student Jacopo Sangiovanni; from the University of Vienna, Prof. Mag. Dr. Martin Zuschin and master’s student Gözde Özer participated. Several undergraduate and graduate students from University of Kyrenia, along with contributions from local clubs and organizations, also supported the project.

Since this project represents the first collaboration between University of Kyrenia and the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, it serves as a steppingstone for future partnerships. Through upcoming projects and studies, numerous scientists, as well as our undergraduate and graduate students, will have the opportunity to participate in similar endeavors thanks to bilateral cooperation and protocols.
