Declared as a "global emergency" by the World Health Organization, monkeypox continues to cause concern. The disease, which is declared to have a very low risk of creating a pandemic compared to COVID-19, still needs to take the necessary precautions. One of these measures is the development of a PCR Diagnostic Kit.

Near East University scientists, who gained significant experience with the scientific studies they carried out, especially on the local PCR Diagnosis and Variant Kit developed during the COVID-19 process, have also come a long way in their research on monkeypox. Near East University researchers developed a PCR Diagnostic Kit to detect monkeypox after the COVID-19 diagnosis and variant kit. With the Monkey Flower PCR Diagnostic Kit developed within the body of the Near East University, the diagnosis of the disease can be made within 1 hour.

Near East University, which is preparing to apply to the Ministry of Health of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus for the use and production permits of the kit, plans to produce the diagnostic kits that the TRNC will need in possible cases of monkeypox by starting production after the necessary permissions.

Recalling the important projects such as the protective nasal spray, the local PCR Diagnosis and Variant Analysis Kit they developed during the COVID-19 process with their fully equipped laboratories and competent staff that continue to work within the body of Near East University, Near East University Acting Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ said, “We are ready to meet the needs of our country and society in a possible monkeypox epidemic, with the opportunities we have and with our competent academic staff and the experience we have gained during the COVID-19 process.”

Stating that the PCR Diagnostic Kit designed by the Near East University to detect the monkeypox virus is one of the first concrete steps they have taken in this direction, Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ said, "We will continue to work and produce for public health with all the facilities we have, especially our fully equipped laboratories such as Kit Production Laboratory and Genome Analysis Laboratory operating within our university."

Reminding that the only local PCR Diagnostic Kit in the TRNC during the COVID-19 epidemic was designed by the Near East University's own scientific teams, Near East University Hospital Medical Genetics Laboratory Supervisor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören said, “We have designed the PCR Diagnostic Kit for Monkeypox virus by working hard with the same discipline. We are proud to be the team that has broken new ground once again."

Stating that they made the diagnosis with the monkeypox PCR Diagnostic Kit they designed, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Çerkez Ergören said, “With the kit we have designed, the diagnosis of monkeypox can be made within an hour.”
