According the press info released by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations of the University of Kyrenia, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) training has been launched for the students at the University of Kyrenia. GMDSS Simulator is the market leading networked simulator and it has been developed and updated by using the latest network and multiplatform technology for GMDSS training. Marine communication system is one of the most important components of maritime training. The University of Kyrenia offers ultimate education opportunities for the students by using the cutting-edge technology devices. GMDSS simulator accurately imitates actual ship-to-ship communications and ship-to-shore stations using highly realistic simulated terrestrial and satellite communication systems. Students will be familiarized with the correct operation of a variety of GMDSS equipment for distress and general communication.
According to the info given by Hilmi Şahlı, the Unlimited Shipmaster responsible for GMDSS training, the new systems have emerged in the line with the technological developments and needs in the marine communication. These systems provide convenience to the operating staff. These systems require responsibly as well since they provide students with communication opportunities related to navigation security, urgencies, harbor operations or another particular subjects.
Şahlı stated that they provide students with training opportunities at the most current conditions by GMDSS that consisted of three parts. “All essential communication equipment found aboard a vessel is included in the GMDSS simulator. GMDSS training has important impacts and outcomes for maritime sector. Being aware of the requirements of the contemporary maritime sector, the Faculty of Maritime of the University of Kyrenia is dedicated to cultivate highly qualified seafarers by providing both theoretical and practical training through using the latest high-tech systems. Communication through radio-telex and satelite is very important in ship to ship, ship to shore communication and it requires expertise” said he.
Şahlı also emphasized that the University of Kyrenia with its infrastructure equipped the latest technology is ready and able to respond and provide support both theoretically and practically to any need related to maritime.
