Presidents of the Muslim countries, especially the President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have been invited to the opening ceremony of the Dr. Suat Günsel Mosque, which is one of the largest mosques not only in the TRNC but also in the region.

Dr. Suat Günsel Mosque, which will be one of the most important symbols of the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, will be opened for worship on January 11, 2024, during Laylat al-Raghaib. Rising on the Near East University campus and designed with inspiration from Ottoman architecture, Dr. Suat Günsel Mosque has 62 domes and 6 minarets. The mosque, where 10 thousand people can worship at the same time, will be one of the largest mosques not only in the TRNC but also in the region.

Dr. Suat Günsel Mosque will be one of the most important symbols of the Turkish presence on the island. Presidents of many Muslim countries, especially the President of the Republic of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, have been invited to the opening ceremony of the Suat Günsel Mosque.

The largest worship center in Cyprus…
Dr. Suat Günsel Mosque is the mosque with the highest capacity on the island of Cyprus, where a total of 10 thousand people can worship at the same time, also has the largest main dome on the island, with a height of 36.8 meters and a diameter of 23.8 meters. In the main part of the mosque, where there are 62 domes including the main dome, there are 27 domes and 9 semi-domes. There are 26 domes in the portico section. The mosque has six minarets in total. Each of the four minarets is 76.2 meters high and has three balconies. The other two minarets, each 56.45 meters high, have two balconies.

Designed by architects and engineers of Near East University, the domes and minarets of Dr. Suat Günsel Mosque have gold-colored stainless steel and chrome plating. The stained glass windows that color the 104 windows of the mosque were created by the artists of the Cyprus Museum of Modern Arts. The handcrafted dome decorations, which were completed in about a year, bear the signature of Uzbek artists. White stone specific to the Cyprus island was used on the exterior of the mosque.

Reminding that more than 450 years have passed since the conquest of Cyprus, Near East Enterprises Board of Trustees Chairman Prof. Dr. İrfan Suat Günsel said, “In this period when we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which we established in 1983 with the strength we derive from our 450-year-old roots and our homeland Turkey, Dr. Suat Günsel Mosque will be opened as one of the most precious symbols of the Turkish presence on the island.”

“We have invited the presidents of many Muslim countries, especially the President of the Republic of Turkey, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, to the opening of the Dr. Suat Günsel Mosque, which will be held on the occasion of Laylat al-Regaib on January 11, 2024,” said Prof. Dr. İrfan Suat Günsel, and added; “We believe that this opening will also be recorded as one of the important turning points in the history of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.”
