Touching upon the crucial role and impacts of global warming and climate change on all aspects of our lives and natural environment, the Scientific Board of the University of Kyrenia stated that many natural disasters had happened in recent years and were likely to happen again due to climate change. The Scientific Board underlined that climate changes that are affecting the whole world had become an important issue that our country should take the necessary precautions by generating an action plan and making it a state policy.
Drawing attention to the importance of an action plan aiming to minimize the pressure on the nature and on use of natural resources by supporting the energy market through incentives on the use of new and environment-friendly sources of energy, the Scientific Board of the University of Kyrenia emphasized the necessity to lay out a strategy, including specific policy recommendations, that our state will use to address climate change and reduce its effects.
According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of the University of Kyrenia, the Scientific Board stated that Climate Change Action Plan, which has already completed by developed countries, should be completed for our country as well and brought into effect immediately. The Scientific Board of the University of Kyrenia highlights the necessity of preparing a road map within the scope of the Climate Change Action Plan that covers all sectors and identifies short, medium and long-term targets.
Scientific Board of the University of Kyrenia: The provisions of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change should be taken in consideration while preparing Climate Change Action Plan
The explanation of the Scientific Board is as follow:
Global warming has begun to affect the climate and consequently climate change has become an important issue that our country has to cope with. Today, the climate change affects our lives in number of ways ranging from floods due to heavy rainfall and lack of infrastructure in our country, shifts in air temperatures and occurrence of summer days in the middle of winter, negative impacts on natural environment, on behavior of inhabitants, as well as on agriculture, forests, food security and health. This kind of threat requires decision makers of our country to enhance their efforts towards developing a Climate Change Action Plan necessarily and timely to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Climate change is not just related with ecological events that affect the environment. Climate change directly affects environment, economy, social life and energy policies. This situation makes it necessary that our decision makers should increase their efforts to develop a sustainable climate change action plan urgently and bring it into effect for a sustainable development in all sectors of our country. Today, the developed and developing countries consider the 3E (Energy-Economy-Ecology) concept as the most important criterion of development. In order not to experience disasters again and again like the flood which paralyzed the life and caused great economic losses in the capital city of Nicosia and other regions of the country on recent days, short, medium and long term targets for combating climate change and measures that covers all sectors of our country should be determined by a Climate Change Action Plan. The Climate Change Action Plan of our country should be prepared by active participation of the ministry responsible for the environment, municipalities, universities, and all other respective stakeholders by taking the provisions of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change into consideration.
