According to the Press release from the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of the University of Kyrenia, the Board of Trustees Chairman Prof. Dr. İlkay Salihoğlu made the opening speech of the seminar and gave a hearty welcome to the attendees. After delivering his remarks regarding the symposium, the YÖDAK President Gökçekuş gave a lecture on the university concept across the globe and in TRNC. Touching upon the global drive for developments and the huge capacity increase in the university sector in the last fifty years as a result of growing higher education demand in the line with the growing welfare of societies, Professor Gökçekuş gave comprehensive information regarding the emerge of university concept within the historical process and drew attention to the demand for higher education growing in the line with the welfare state concept. Delivering information regarding the unparalleled contributions to the development of the country catapulted by mutual interactions between universities and other stakeholders in the United States of America, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Gökçekuş underlined the importance of interactions and interrelations between the university sector and other institutions and sectors including agriculture, industry, civil society and the state.

Drawing attention to the rapid grow in higher education sector, Prof. Dr. Gökçekuş stated that programs covering a wide spectrum were offered by universities to meet the growing demand of societies. “The expansion and diversification of the rapid grow in higher education to all sectors has caused a significant increase in public spending and as a result of this, political power is more involved in higher education system and established organs to control the system in order to ensure a structure which is more transparent, more competitive in responding the economic and social needs of the society” said he.

Pointing out the crucial role of universities in creating information societies and economy, Professor Gökçekuş noted that the growing competitive environment of the universities led the establishment of international quality assurance systems. “This transformation that experienced in the higher education process has led “internationalization” and higher education institutions have begun to undertake transnational roles and services. In this context, TRNC has fully turned into an international higher education center which currently provides higher education for 75 thousand students from 127 countries” said he. Touching upon the handicaps that TRNC encountered because of the political conjuncture, Professor Gökçekuş emphasized that they usually overcame the obstacles by setting forth quality projects that make sound all over the world.
