Being the first university of TRNC that established solely on maritime and aviation sciences, the University of Kyrenia is giving a start to the second stage of its marine research…

Research and training ships are integral parts of maritime training and research studies. Owning TEAL, which is the first and the only fully equipped training and research ship of TRNC, stands out as a distinguished feature of the University of Kyrenia.

According to the press release from the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office, the research teams of the University of Kyrenia will be on board of TEAL to realize the second stage of marine research in the first year of its establishment. The research teams of the University of Kyrenia will launch a number of particularly important research studies in our seas. In different practical and concrete ways, these research studies will propel the transition towards a sustainable economy for our country. During these second stage marine research studies, the fully equipped TEAL, the research and training ship of the University of Kyrenia, will be used to carry out all required scientific studies to collect data on the marine life, bio-economy areas in our seas, marine biodiversity, and fishery potential. All research subjects are very important to pave the way towards to maintain a sustainable development for TRNC as a marine country. As part of this effort the research teams also aim to identify areas which have potential to be specially protected marine areas.

There is much to be done for the development of the maritime potential in scientific and economic aspect…

Making a statement regarding the issue, Prof. Dr. İlkay Salihoğlu, Chairman of Board of Trustees and Acting Rector of the University of Kyrenia, said that there was much to be done for the development of the maritime potential in scientific and economic aspect. “Since the seas have a great importance for the life on the land, as the leading gear of the maritime education in TRNC, the University of Kyrenia is dedicated to continue to conduct marine research to evaluate the economic potential of sea products, bio economy potential in our seas, marine biodiversity and impacts of external factors on marine life. As a marine country, our country does not benefit enough from the marine potential. The economic potential of sea products is not evaluated sufficiently in a sustainable manner. Scientific research is a must to identify and maintain a sustainable evaluation for the bio economy potential of our seas. It is a necessity to create specially protected areas both in our seas and coasts to contribute to marine life as well as the economy and tourism” said he.

Touching upon the primary mission of the university, Prof. Dr. Salihoğlu underlined that the highest contribution possible from academic, economic and scientific aspect would primarily be provided to develop the marine potential of our country. “In this regard the University of Kyrenia has made significant contributions to both EU projects and other international research studies conducted in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Our contributions and respective research studies will increasingly go on” emphasized he.
