The University of Kyrenia will receive students for the Department of Aircraft Engineering in the fall semester of the academic year 2014-2015.

The University of Kyrenia is continuing to enrich its educational facilities by opening new departments under its structure. The Department of Aircraft Engineering is a newly established department which scheduled to start its educational life under the Faculty of Aviation and Space Sciences in the fall semester of the academic year 2014-2015. The Aircraft engineering program will be offered through a four year bachelor’s degree program and the medium of instruction will be English. Nowadays, the aviation industry is one of the fastest growing industries and many public or private players are entering into this field thereby creating a large number of employment opportunities to the aircraft engineers.

According to the press statement issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of the University of Kyrenia (Girne University, Cyprus), the growing importance of air transportation and thereby the increase in the number of companies dealing with charter aircraft, cargo aircraft, air taxi and air ambulance services, and as well as the increase in the number of aircrafts due to the increase in the number of passengers bring along with it an ever increasing demand for qualified aircraft engineers. According to the research results reported by Boeing, the world’s largest aerospace company, 601 thousand new aircraft technicians, mechanics and engineers are projected to be employed by the aviation industry in the coming decades. Aircraft engineers are considered among the high income professionals. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics concerning the year 2012, the median annual salary earned by aircraft engineers was $103,720 ($49.87 per hour). The number of jobs available for aircraft engineers in 2012 was 83 thousands. Employment of aircraft engineers is projected to grow 7 percent from 2012 to 2022. The high demand for aircraft engineers and technicians can be considered as the employment guarantee for the graduates from the Department of Aircraft Engineering.

In his explanation, Prof. Dr. Süleyman Tolun, Dean of the Faculty of Aviation and Space Sciences, highlighted that the aim of the Aircraft Engineering program is to equip the students with adequate knowledge and skills required for the operation, design, construction, repair, test and maintenance of all kind of aerospace vehicle systems including commercial and military aircrafts. Prof. Dr. Tolun gave further information by stating that the aircraft engineering program covered a range of specific courses that focused on basic science, aerodynamics, gas dynamics, heat transfer, construction-material, flight mechanics, aircraft design, flight instruments, production engineering, and avionics. He noted that the graduates would be presented diplomas and licensed as aircraft engineers, after completing the four year undergraduate program successfully. Highlighting that the program also focused on practical training in the labs and mandatory internships through the aircrafts owned by the university, Prof. Dr. Tolun once again emphasized that the Department of Aircraft Engineering was one of the departments with employment guarantee, adding that the graduates of this department could be employed in various fields of aviation industry.

Touching upon the “First Receive Your Education, Pay Your Fee After the Graduation” campaign started by the University of Kyrenia for the academic year 2014-2015, Prof. Dr. Tolun stated that the students, who enroll in the Aircraft Engineering program, would start to pay their fees after graduating from the university. Stating that they offered only 7 registration vacancies for TRNC citizens, Prof. Dr. Tolun invited the students interested in the field of aviation to look into the program of the Aircraft Engineering. Tolun also invited the enthusiast students to receive their education at the Department of Aircraft Engineering in order to raise their aspirations and achieve a brilliant career.
