As part of the World Hydrography Day, University of Kyrenia and Near East University participated in the Ocean Sampling Day via events.

According to the joint press release issued by both the Directorates of Press and Public Relations of University of Kyrenia and Near East University, both universities have been participating in the OSD for three subsequent years now and that currently, there were 150 members of this global intervention.

The Ocean Sampling Day (OSD) is a simultaneous sampling campaign of the world’s oceans which first took place in summer solstice (June 21st) in 2014. These cumulative samples, related in time, space and environmental parameters, provide insights into fundamental rules describing microbial diversity and function and contribute to the blue economy through the identification of novel, ocean-derived biotechnologies.

Samples are taken from oceans synchronously to collect environmental data regarding the oceans; in relation to Micro B3 Project which stands for “Microbial Biodiversity, Bioinformatics and Biotechnology“. These are said to reflect the three main pillars that the B3 project addresses. The central concept of this collaborative project (large-scale integrating project) is to team up an interdisciplinary and intersectoral set of world class European researchers to overcome current obstacles in marine biodiversity research and blue biotechnology.
