University of Kyrenia 2020-2021 Spring Semester graduates received their diplomas on 30 June Wednesday, at 10:00 after a magnificent ceremony held on campus.
The ceremony that took place at the University of Kyrenia Grand Library Congress Hall was attended by the Representative of the Security Forces Command, Naval Colonel İsmail Kılıç, the Kyrenia District Governor Sinan Güneş, YÖDAK member Prof. Dr. Hasret Balcıoğlu, Member of Parliament Fikri Toros, Rector Prof. Dr. İlkay Salihoğlu, Members of the Board of Trustees, Civil Defense Kyrenia Regional Director Coşkun Neşesibol, Vice-Rectors, Secretary-General, Chief Physicians, Institute Directors, Deans, Deputy Deans, Heads of Departments, Vocational School Directors, Academic Staff, alumni, parents, and guests.
Families and guests welcomed ‘graduates’ with a round of applause as they entered the ceremonial hall with joy and pride. The graduation ceremony began with a moment of silence followed by the national anthem.
Making the opening speech of the ceremony, Rector Prof. Dr. İlkay Salihoğlu first greeted all the participants and stated that they are pleased to meet with the graduates face to face again after the graduation ceremonies that held online for two semesters due to the pandemic process and that they wished to continue this way without interruption.
Prof. Dr. İlkay Salihoğlu emphasized that the development process of the University of Kyrenia continues with the decision of the Günsel family in this difficult period, and said that the Grand Library complex, which includes the congress hall where the graduation ceremony was held, and the new building of the Faculty of Health Sciences were completed within this direction.
Salihoğlu stated that the library will be operational before the fall semester begins, thanks to the devoted work of the staff of the University of Kyrenia and the Near East University Grand Library.
Salihoğlu also underlined the contributions of Head of NEU Museums Department Prof. Dr. Ali Efdal Özkul in the organization of social activities and reminded that Academic Member of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature of Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Near East University, and Head of Cyprus Research Centre Prof. Dr. Şevket Öznur donated approximately 15 thousand books to the GU Grand Library and expressed his gratitude to everyone who contributed.
Stating that the physical facilities of the University of Kyrenia have grown in parallel with the development in the academic structure, Prof. Dr. İlkay Salihoğlu added that with the Tourism Faculty that was established recently, the number of programs in 14 faculties has reached to 71 and that they are making progress towards their goal to become an educational institution that stands out with its academic quality and conducts quality scientific research.
Rector Prof. Dr. Ilkay Salihoğlu also expressed his gratitude to the Günsel family, who provide all kinds of material and moral support at all these stages.
Addressing the graduates at the end of his speech, Salihoğlu congratulated the students on their deserved success and said that today is a day of pride for both themselves and their families, and thanked the faculty members for their efforts.
Prof. Dr. İlkay Salihoğlu concluded his words as follows: “Dear parents of graduates, you have entrusted us your precious children, and we are handing them over to you as professional adults. I believe that all of you, our graduates, will represent our country in the best way around the world. We are not separating with the graduation, University of Kyrenia is your home. “
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Energy Prof. Erhan Arıklı who could not attend the ceremony due to his duty in the Parliament send a message congratulating the graduates.
On behalf of all graduates, İrem Bozkurt from the Department of Special Education of the Faculty of Education, on behalf of the international graduates, Faith Chinjodzi from the Department of Aviation Management of the Faculty of Aviation and Space Sciences, and on behalf of the graduates who speak Turkish, Rojbin Aydemir from the Department of Nursing of the Faculty of Health Sciences gave a speech and shared their feelings and thoughts.
After the speeches of the student representatives, first, diplomas and gifts were presented to the Institute graduates.
Diplomas, medals and gifts were given to the students who finished the 2020-2021 Spring Semester with a degree, which Giz
em Nur Şahin from the Faculty of Education, Guidance and Psychological Counselling Department completed as the top student in the university. Also undergraduate and associate degree diplomas were given to those who were entitled to graduate from the Faculty and Vocational School programs.
During the ceremony, graduates of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department under the leadership of Assist. Prof. Dr. Özge Çakır Topukçu, and graduates of the Nursing Department accompanied by the Acting Head of the Department, Specialist Hazel Şahin Tarım recited their oath.
The graduates of the Health Services Vocational School recited their oath under the leadership of the Director of Vocational School Prof. Dr. Arzu Babayiğit.
The emotional and enjoyable ceremony which presented by Ezgi Dülek from the Communication and Corporate Relations Office and Pembe Omorfolu from the Health, Culture and Sports Department ended with a cocktail held after the cutting of the graduation cake.
