Sailing and Water Sports School has been established under the University of Kyrenia

At the senate meeting of University of Kyrenia that realized on 6 August 2014, a decision regarding the establishment of the Sailing and Water Sports School under the University of Kyrenia was made.

According to the press statement issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of the University of Kyrenia, Tümer Garip, the member of Board of Trustees, was assigned as the Director of the Sailing and Water sports School. The Sailing and Water sports School aims to provide courses for every age group from juniors through to adults at every level of experience from beginner to advanced. Initially, optimist sailing courses, laser sailing courses, and amateur yacht master courses will be provided by this school. Course registration dates and the relevant dates and times that the courses will be running, will be announced within the forthcoming days. The participants will be presented certificates and licenses when they complete the course.

Sailing and Water Sports School Director Tümer Garip delivered information regarding the objectives of the newly established school by stating that the school set out to attract the interest of sea enthusiasts and provide training opportunity to enable them to reach the top of their potentials through education and best practice, and as well as to contribute the development of water sports in our country as an essential life skill, an integral part of health, and competitive sports. Mr. Garip noted that the school would organize both sailing and water sports courses in a broad spectrum. Tümer Garip delivered further information regarding the courses by stating that the Sailing and Water Sports School would offer an incredible learning environment for the young enthusiast with condition for every skill level. They would begin to offer Optimist Sailing Course, Laser Sailing Course and Amateur Yacht Master Course in September as the initial phase of the courses. Stating that the dates and times of the courses would be arranged and scheduled so as not to coincide with the school hours of the young participants, Mr. Garip said: “Optimist sailing is a program designed for children aged 6-12. The program will be taught by qualified and experienced instructors who will be in attendance at all times; both on land and on the water. The courses will be taught in accordance with standards emphasizing safety, theory, boat handling and sportsmanship. Laser sailing program is designed for children aged 13 and over. Those who have no sailing experience will be taught personally by our qualified instructors. After gaining adequate knowledge, experience, confidence and ability to control the craft, they will continue the course in groups. Amateur Yacht Master Course is designed for young people aged 18 and over. The course comprises 11 day theoretical and 5 day practical training and aims to issue license at the end of the course. After completing the course, an examination will be held for the participants. Amateur Yacht Master License will be issued to the successful ones”. Touching upon the fact that our country is a seagirt island, Mr. Garip stated that they would organize competitive races such as sailing races, Jet Ski races and yacht rally alongside the courses in the line with fundamental objectives of the school, adding that the geographic location and climate of our country was highly suitable for water sports. Mr. Garip gave the good news that the Sailing and Water sports School of University of Kyrenia would organize various activities to facilitate further water sports by offering many courses which had never been run at TRNC before.
