The Chairman of Board of Trustees of the University of Kyrenia Prof. Dr. İlkay Salihoğlu put significant contribution to the international research on Cyprus fisheries sector covering the time period between 1950 and 2010. The result of the research was published in Germany by Springer, one of Europe’s and the world’s well-established publishing companies.

According to the info provided by the Press and Public Relations Office of the University of Kyrenia (Girne University Cyprus), alongside the University of Kyrenia, the University of British Colombia from Canada, the Eastern Mediterranean University, and AP Marine Environmental Consultancy Ltd from the South Cyprus contributed to research study. In this study, Cyprus total marine fisheries catch covering the time period between 1950 and 2010 were reconstructed by estimating all fishery removals, including unreported commercial, subsistence and recreational catches, and major discards. These estimates were added to the ‘officially reported’ data submitted by countries to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The result of the study was published in Germany by Springer under the title “Unifying the catch data of a divided island: Cyprus’s marine fisheries catch, 1950–2010”.

In This study, the fishing history of Cyprus is presented in three distinct time periods including British Colonial Rule, United Cyprus, and Two Entities. The study presents all details concerning Cyprus fishery industry between 1950 and 2010. The study also comprises detailed information on marine fisheries catch including species and quantities, types and number of fishing boats, and professional and amateur fishermen by years. This study which examines the fishery industry in Cyprus and sheds light on the future of Cyprus’ marine industry is a first in terms of its dimensions and scope. This study provides data regarding the marine industry in North and South Cyprus separately and on the island in its entirety.
