Exhibition of Piri Reis Maps opened by President Irina Vlah and İrfan Günsel in Bodrum

The exhibition of maps of Piri Reis, who was a famous Ottoman Naval Admiral of his time and is regarded as one of the most important figures of the marine history of the world, was opened to public at the Conservation Area of Milta Bodrum Marina Ottoman Shipyard which was first established in 1775. The exhibition has been organized with cooperation of Near East University, University of Kyrenia, and Milta Bodrum Marina.

According to a press info released by Press and Public Relations Directorate of Near East University, Nicosia, Cyprus, the opening ceremony of Exhibition of Piri Reis Maps has been realized at District Governorate Art Galery of Milta Bodrum Marina Ottoman Shipyard with intense participation of Her Excellency Irına Vlah, President of Autonomous Republic of Gagauzia, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel, Chairman of Board of Trustees of Near East University, politicians and administrative authorities of the region, as well as the national and local media members.

Mr. Ömer Karacalar, the General Director of Milta Bodrum Marina, delivered a speech at the beginning of the opening ceremony and expressed his delightfulness for hosting such a significant event at Milta Bodrum Marina, and extended his thanks to Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan Günsel, Chairman of Board of Trustees of Near East University, for his contributions in realizing this event.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrfan S. Günsel, Chairman of Board of Trustees of Near East University, realizing the opening of exhibition with Irina Vlah, President of Gagauzian Autonomous Republic, delivered a speech and said that, in accordance with the scope of social responsibility projects that aim to contribute to social and cultural life of TRNC, they organize various activities and events open to public visit. Günsel also empahisezed that within the last two years and in accordance with the social responsibility projects leading to organization of a most meaningful event, they opened Piri Reis and Levant Maritime History with reference to culture and history of our maritime studies, and organized the exhibition of “Dardanalles Naval War With Its Unknown Aspects” on the 100th commemorating year of Epic of Gallipoli (Dardanelles) which changed the flow of history, and through the exhibitions, aimed to raise an intellectual awareness on maritime history in minds and hearts both in Cyprus and at international platforms.

The exhibition of Piri Reis Maps that has been realized through the joint study of the Near East University, which supports and promotes the development of maritime in North Cyprus and in Turkey, and of the University of Kyrenia, which is the first and only university of Cyprus specializing on maritime and aviation studies, will be open for visits until 23rd July 2015 t MiltaBodrum Marina.
