University of Kyrenia hosted the meeting regarding the feasibility study on Eastern Mediterranean Expansion of Vessel Traffic Services

Executed at the helm of General Directorate of Sea and Continental Waters Regulation, which functions under the body of TR Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communication, and which will also involve the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the pre-meeting regarding the feasibility study on Eastern Mediterranean Expansion of Vessel Traffic Services was held at Faculty of Maritime Studies of the University of Kyrenia, which is located within the campus of Near East University, on April 20, 2015.

According to the press release issued by the Directorate of Press and Public Relations Office of University of Kyrenia, pre-meeting regarding the feasibility study on Eastern Mediterranean Expansion of Vessel Traffic Services was held at Faculty of Maritime Studies of the University of Kyrenia, which is located within the campus of Near East University, on April 20, 2015. This meeting was held as part of the framework of Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) Project, which involves the establishment of Vessel Traffic Management Center (VTMC) in Ankara, the installation of which is continued towards to cover the Regional Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) in Izmir, Izmir Golf, Northern Aegean, Iskenderun and Mersin regions in which vessel traffic is intense and risky.

Making a statement on the matter, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of University of Kyrenia, Prof. Dr. Ilkay Salihoğlu, and expressed that the Vessel Traffic Management Systemic Project was of vital significance for the regional sea traffic. Furthermore, he expressed that as a result of cooperation, it also was important regarding the maritime affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) through the establishment of the Vessel Traffic Service System.

Being executed by the General Directorate of Sea and Continental Waters Regulation, which functions under the body of TR Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communication, and as part of the Vessel Traffic Management System Project and its feasibility of Vessel Traffic Services Eastern Mediterranean Expansion (TRNC) is being supported by: General Directorate of Sea and Continental Waters Regulation; project running firm SELEX; Turkish Naval Forces; Coast Guard Command; General Directorate of Coastal Safety; Department of Information Technologies, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Peace Keeping Forces; Cyprus Turkish Coastal Security and Vessel Saving Ltd.; Istanbul Technical University TRNC Education and Research Campus; and TRNC Directorate of Harbours.

It was revealed that on behalf of the University of Kyrenia, the Academic Member of Faculty of Maritime Studies of University of Kyrenia; Captain Mehmet Emin Debeş is taking part in the Commission conducting comprehensive efforts to include the Turkish republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to the Vessel Traffic Systems, and for the establishment of the TRNC Vessel Traffic Service System.
